Introduction
Research Question: Innovative Discussion on Cloud Dyeing Process under Chinese Traditional Plant Dyeing Technique.
The sub-research proposition comes from the experimental part of traditional Chinese technology on the printing and dyeing process of fabrics under the influence of traditional Chinese handicrafts.
. Based on the artistic value of contemporary plant printing and dyeing design, this proposal will explore innovative designs in experiments.
Background
Plant printing and dyeing technique have developed many different process types, such as tie-dyeing, batik dyeing, and plant extension dyeing, etc. Each printing and dyeing process has its specific effect. For example, the handicraft made of cloud dyeing in the tie-dyeing process can better reflect the hazy feeling, thin brightness and erratic nature of Yun Ran (colouring technique) (see Figure 1). The batik is a precise and clear pattern, mainly using the wax extension method, the wax splash method, etc. to ensure the early pattern imaging (see Figure 2).
I made a field investigation of the whole process of batik making in the mountainous area of Guizhou province and found that they would also produce natural irregular texture - ice lines[3]
. The abstract texture generated unconsciously gave me great inspiration, and I decided to use the texture that is similar to the crystal clear ice flowers condensed in nature in the process of cloud dyeing (see Figure 3 and 4).
At the 2018 menswear series conference, Yohji Yamamoto applied the traditional dyeing techniques of cloud dyeing and tie-dyeing to men's suits and wide-leg pants (see Figure 5). Dior's tie-dye series for Autumn/Winter 2020 is dominated by batik and partially abstracted with different shades of texture (see Figure 6).
